Roundtable: How the Washington Capitals can beat the Pittsburgh Penguins this time

Greg Wyshynski, senior NHL writer: Whoa, how crazy is it that the Penguins had their NHL franchise charter revoked in the middle of the playoffs, as that’s clearly the only way they could possibly lose a series to the Capitals? Wait, they didn’t?

Chris Peters, NHL prospects writer: First, I’d have to make sure I wasn’t hallucinating. After that, I’d probably learn that Holtby, with some restored confidence after four consecutive victories against the Columbus Blue Jackets, was at the top of his game. His.932 career save percentage in the postseason hasn’t necessarily helped a ton against Pittsburgh in previous years, but this time it’s enough, especially if Penguins goalie Matt Murray’s numbers continued to dip.

The Capitals would need big performances from their depth players to bolster the expected production from their top guys like Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom, Evgeny Kuznetsov and John Carlson, who had been so strong against Columbus and continued to be threatening against Pittsburgh.

Four are transfers, one hasn’t started — and might not start for his current school. One more suffered a serious injury, his season in question pending an NCAA decision. There are a lot of question marks with this group before we even get to the film.

Sporting News college football writers Bill Bender and Zac Al-Khateeb and NFL writers Vinnie Iyer and Tadd Haislop voted on their top 10 for next season. Here’s the group we came up with heading into 2019:

Fitzgerald doubles as a punishing runner (2,486 rushing yards, 33 touchdowns) and an improving passer for the Bulldogs, but the career completion percentage (55.4) needs a lot of work. Fitzgerald is big (6-5, 230 pounds), and it will be interesting to see what kind of bump he gets from a year with new coach Joe Moorhead.

This is a tough one. Teammate Dwayne Haskins could just as easily be in this spot next season. Burrow, however, needs a chance to play at either Ohio State — or another Cheap Bruins Jerseys spot, potentially. When he does, Burrow is going to show why he deserves a shot at the next level. There’s potential for a Mitchell Trubisky-like move up the board.

Thorson suffered a torn ACL in the Music City Bowl, and his status for this season remains a question mark. He’s mobile, excels at throwing the football out of the pocket and has prototypical NFL size (6-4, 225). Some other boards will have Cheap Chelsea Jerseys him higher on their list.

Nats’ Dusty Baker plays 2 hunches in late innings vs. Cubs; both fail

A town that already held bad playoff memories for Dusty Baker found a way to torment him again.

The Washington Nationals manager sat down in the interview room to explain two late-inning pitching changes that went south. Combined, they produced a 2-1 loss that left Washington on the brink of elimination in the National League Division Series against the Chicago Cubs.

Judging by how Baker leaned in toward the microphone to answer questions, his seat must have already been hot.

“I probably couldn’t live with myself if [Kyle] Schwarber had had hit one out of the park,” Baker began, “which he’s dangerous to do that.”

Trailing 2-1, the Rangers pressured an injury-depleted Blues squad in the third period, outshooting St. Louis 16-8.

New York outshot the Blues 32-23 overall.

“There’s no doubt that in the first two periods we didn’t generate a lot,” New York coach Alain Vigneault said. “In the third I thought we brought a lot more energy and willpower. We spent a lot more time in their end and we finally got some pretty good looks but we weren’t able to score.”

Hutton, in his first start of the season, was a significant reason why the Rangers were stymied. His three biggest stops occurred in the third period, beginning with Michael Grabner’s short-handed semi-breakaway, later followed by Jimmy Vesey’s stuff-in attempt during a goalmouth scrum, and Pavel Buchnevich’s try from the low slot.

Buchnevich slammed his stick against the ice in Cheap Chelsea Jerseys frustration a moment after the whistle blew to stop play.

“I felt really comfortable,” Hutton said. “In the Cheap Discount Jerseys third we hung on.”
