Aaron Colvin ready for a chance to prove he’s just as good outside

On the same team with Pro Bowl corners Jalen Ramsey and A.J. Bouye last season, Aaron Colvin played as a slot corner. He did the job very well, but Colvin left for Houston and a chance to prove he can do the same outside.

It’s kind of past talking for me right now, Colvin said, via Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle. It’s something burning inside me. I can’t really explain, but I’ll wake everybody up this year.

Love produced that output despite being limited by an ankle injury he suffered midway through last season (he missed one game) that reportedly kept him out of contact drills this spring. Unless the injury lingers into the fall, Love should be able to manage a heavy workload without issue. A seasoned offensive line that brings back first-team All-Pac-12 guard Nate Herbig plus three other conference honorable mentions will create ample space for Love to jet through, and head coach David Shaw can shift some of Love’s carries to a capable, change-of-pace power back in senior Cameron Scarlett. From the moment he takes his first handoff in Stanford’s Aug. 31 opener against San Diego State, Love shouldn’t have a hard time reminding us why he’s the premier rusher in the sport.

However, it appears as though Pitta and Johnson have replaced White on the broadcasts. White is not listed among the broadcast crews for either the radio or preseason television broadcasts for the team.

White has served as a color analyst for the Ravens broadcasts since 2006.

The television broadcasts remain unchanged as Sandusky, former Ravens head coach Brian Billick and sideline reporter Evan Washburn will call the preseason games.

Saleh concurs. The game’s not played with two-backs anymore, so you hardly get a chance to actually see the 3-4 element of 3-4 teams, he says. It’s mostly all one-gap concepts along the D-line nowadays.

Packers post record revenues in 2017

For all the concerns expressed by some that the business of the NFL might be in decline, the Packers offer a rebuttal.

As the only publicly held team — thus the only one required to open its books — the Packers serve as an indicator for the financial health of the league, and the numbers keep going up.

According to Richard Ryman of the Green Bay Press-Gazette, the Packers reported record revenue and record expenses in 2017.

My whole life I played in a 3-4, says Buckner. It was about defending two gaps all through college and even a little bit into high school. So [in 2016] it was easy for me as a rookie to come in, working in the same scheme and everything. Last year was an adjustment. But I got the hang of it and I like the 4-3 a lot better. I like being able to penetrate against the run and get vertical. That penetration against the run so naturally converts to a pass rush that, as Buckner explains it, not even the fake handoffs of play-action slow down the D-line.

While Buckner’s smooth transition to gap penetrator is commendable, it should be expected of any first-rounder in this day and age. Because as Paul Guenther, the defensive coordinator working across the Bay in Oakland, puts it, the whole 3-4 vs. 4-3 thing gets way overblown. You’re in nickel 60% of the time anyway. Most nickel fronts feature four down linemen.

Bell has not said if he’ll follow the same script as last year and report to the Steelers just before training camp. There have been suggestions that he could extend his holdout into the season, although he’d lose $852,000 each time the team plays a game without him and having his best season to date seems unlikely if he’s going to miss a big chunk of it by choice.

In the first edition of Peter King’s Football Morning in America, NFL senior V.P. of officiating Al Riveron attempts to address concerns about the new helmet rules (and, yes, there are two of them, not one) by explaining that the new rule that prohibits players from lowering their helmets and initiating contact will not lead to an ejection-fest.

That’s fine. That’s nice. But that’s hardly the primary reason to believe that potentially revolutionary changes to the game of football will happen as these two new helmet rules took root.

Jameis Winston’s Uber Driver Gives First Statement Since Alleged Sexual Assault

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Jameis Winston issued an apology on Thursday to the Uber driver who accused him of sexually assaulting her. On Friday, the driver, whose name is Kate, issued her first public statement since the incident.

Kate was driving Winston after he left a nightclub in Scottsdale, Ariz. in March 2016 after he became intoxicated, and Winston allegedly grabbed her crotch while they waited in a restaurant drive-thru lane. She filed a formal complaint to Uber about him, and Winston’s Uber priviledges were revoked. The driver has not pressed charges but she shared her story with Buzzfeed News last fall. The NFL launched an investigation into the allegations shortly therafter.

This is the story about the two coaches behind these envied offenses, where they learned their schemes, how those schemes work, what it means for the rest of the league—and why it’s about to give us the NFL’s greatest coaching rivalry.

The can’t-go-broke-taking-a-profit mentality then paid off in a sideways playoff win over Buffalo, with Bortles’ 88 rushing yards proving to be enough on a bad day for the Jags offense. A week later, against the Steelers, the payoff came, with downfield shots there because the threat of the checkdown was established. Bortles was efficient again at Foxboro in the conference title game defeat.

And it showed up again during OTAs in how Bortles can now, with a full year under Hackett, apply the offense based on what the defense is throwing at him. One example: Hackett called a shot play, and Jaguars defensive coordinator Todd Wash was bringing the house. Bortles calmly checked to a run.

It was basically, ‘I don’t want to throw the ball down the field,’ Hackett said. And I’m like, ‘That’s what we’re talking about.’ He’s learning, we want this play for this specific look. That’s where you want to be. You look at the defense and the play call, and if we can’t get it, go to something else. That takes time and comfort in a system.

Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka and team president of basketball operations Magic Johnson have been trying to restore the team’s culture as they rebuild the roster.

The duo sometimes leans on what they refer to as Lakers DNA — core pillars and characteristics they look for in players to add to their rebuild. Among those traits are a high basketball IQ, a healthy obsession with basketball, strong work ethic and habits, and a burning desire to win.

Before the Lakers set out to land superstars like LeBron James and Paul George in free agency in the coming weeks — superstars who embody all of those traits — Johnson and Pelinka exposed their young core to some of the most successful individuals on the planet.

Pelinka also wants to see his players develop diverse interests off the court, much like Bryant, who became an Academy Award-winning filmmaker (animated short category) after retiring. It’s why the Lakers GM — who constantly is reading up on what made some of history’s most successful figures like Leonardo da Vinci tick — organized team field trips to Broadway’s Hamilton and Musk’s SpaceX, where Walton and his players were surprised to see how young many of Musk’s brightest rocket scientists are.

But for argument’s sake, let’s say you’re taking one season of both players at their primes. Do you opt for Favre’s freewheeling style and Moss’s uncoverable deep ball? Rodgers’ rocket arm and Johnson’s absurd combination of size, speed, and strength? Or Brady’s unflappable winning ways and Brown’s ability to create big plays out of thin air?

If you ask me, Moss is the best receiver in NFL history. Many would say Jerry Rice, and there are plenty of numbers to back that up. Rice dominates every receiving record in the books. But hurl a ball into double coverage and there’s absolutely no receiver I’d trust more than Moss to go up and get it.

He’s so synonymous with catches over helpless defensive backs that the NFL’s equivalent to getting dunked on is getting Moss-ed.

During the best season of his career — the Patriots’ 16-0 regular season in 2007 — Moss caught an NFL-record 23 touchdowns in a New England offense that threw deep often.

Now imagine Moss being paired with the guy who immediately pops into your head when someone says a quarterback is a gunslinger.
